Chapter 12

Well, her plan had worked, though not quite in the way she’d intended it. Cassie had definitely reminded Devon of their shared past, but Devon made a good point. They still needed to figure out if they liked who they were now. Heavy stuff.

Experience told her that working on an escape room together would help with that. She’d seen it in her customers. Couples who’d been married for years could not communicate a simple four-digit code from across the room. Newly dating teenagers who seemed to be so in sync they barely needed to speak to pass on information. There was no hiding during the pressures of a counting-down clock. You either communicated, or you lost.

Dramatic? Sure. But honest.

Cassie pulled into the Escape-o-Rama parking lot, parking as far as she could from the establishment. She didn’t want to risk a ding on her baby. This truck had been with her for over a decade. If she treated her right, she’d be with Cassie for another ten years.

She threw the truck into park and turned to Devon. “Ready?”

Her stomach flipped a bit at Devon’s easy smile and nod.

She’d originally invited Devon here for a reason—to show her exactly the kind of company Escape-o-Rama was. Cassie hoped it wouldn’t destroy this delicate thing they were rebuilding between them. The drive here had felt like the beginning of something fragile and special. And now Cassie worried she was about to poke the bear and screw everything up.

They got out of the truck. Cassie left her coat in the cab — she didn’t want to have to deal with it inside. Seeing that, Devon took off her own peacoat and left it on the front seat.

Cassie had to take a moment to appreciate Devon dressed down. Yeah, Devon in her skirts and pumps was sexy as hell. But Devon in casual wear seemed more real, somehow, unlike the prettied-up version of herself.

Either way, she looked great in whatever she wore.

“Are … are you checking me out?” Devon looked over her shoulder, catching Cassie staring.

“You bet your ass I am.”

Devon let out a giggle, her cheeks turning bright red. God, that made her look even more adorable. “Save it for after the escape room.”

They were both giggling as they walked beneath the red and yellow awning with the familiar Escape-o-Rama logo. Inside, they found a simple lobby with chairs and locks on the walls. Cassie thought hers looked better, and she wasn’t being modest. Then again, her business didn’t have the wear and tear this one did. You’d think they’d replace the carpet once it got a hole worn in it near the front door, but no. She kicked at it, irrationally annoyed at this lack of basic care at the very entrance of the establishment.

Devon didn’t seem to notice. She went up to the front desk, which was empty of any employees. Cassie pulled out her phone and double checked their reservation. They were about fifteen minutes early, but that was a good thing.
